Principado de Asturias

Asturias

A green, rainy corner of Atlantic Spain where the mountains meet the sea and nobody is trying to sell you a suntan.

Its story

A narrow, dramatic strip of Atlantic coastline backed almost immediately by the Cantabrian Mountains, including the western half of the Picos de Europa — one of the steepest transitions from sea level to high peaks in Spain.

Pre-Romanesque churches around Oviedo (UNESCO, 9th century — older than the rest of Spain's Romanesque architecture), cider-house culture (chigres), Covadonga pilgrimage, Semana Grande in Gijón

Fabada asturiana, cachopo, sidra (poured from height, never just drunk), queso Cabrales, arroz con leche

Slow and rural outside the two main cities — this is 'green Spain', built around mountains, cider and rain, not beach tourism

What almost nobody knowsAsturias has the highest concentration of pre-Romanesque architecture in the world — churches built in the 9th century, before the rest of Europe's Romanesque style even existed.

Hidden gems

Taramundi

A remote western village famous for centuries-old artisan knife-making workshops, in one of Asturias' quietest rural corners.

Bulnes

A hamlet inside the Picos de Europa reachable only on foot or by funicular — no road access at all.

Places to know: Picos de Europa National Park · Covadonga · Oviedo old town (UNESCO pre-Romanesque monuments) · Cudillero fishing village

The Dream Nest view

Who it suits

Mostly Spanish domestic buyers and 'indianos' — Asturians (or their descendants) returning after emigrating, historically to Latin America. Genuine international lifestyle buyers are rare.

Mortgage notes

Very few non-resident mortgage cases originate here. Banks in this market are set up for domestic lending and typically have limited experience assessing foreign income profiles.

Worth knowing before you commit

Expect rain and humidity year-round, not the dry Mediterranean sun most international buyers picture in Spain. The resale market is thin and illiquid outside Oviedo and Gijón, and few professionals here are experienced with non-resident financing.
