Segovia

Twenty-seven minutes from Madrid by train, and still a place most of Madrid only visits for the day.

Its story

The northern slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama descending into the Castilian plateau, with the walled old city sitting on a rocky spur between two rivers.

The Alcázar, the Roman aqueduct, a UNESCO-listed old town, and the royal palace and gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso

Cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig) is the signature dish, alongside judiones de La Granja beans and ponche segoviano

Small, historic and very walkable, tranquil once the day-trip crowds leave

What almost nobody knowsThe Roman aqueduct's granite blocks are held together with no mortar at all — precision-cut stone and gravity alone have kept it standing for nearly two thousand years.

Hidden gems

Pedraza

A medieval walled village known for a summer festival lit entirely by candlelight — one of the most complete medieval townscapes in Castile, a short drive from the capital.

Sierra de Guadarrama National Park

Granite peaks and pine forests on Segovia's southern edge, offering genuine mountain trails within an hour of Madrid.

Places to know: Roman Aqueduct of Segovia (UNESCO) · Alcázar of Segovia · Segovia Cathedral · Sierra de Guadarrama National Park

The Dream Nest view

Who it suits

Mostly Spanish second-home and commuter buyers; not currently a hotspot for Dream Nest's typical international, complex-income clientele.

Mortgage notes

The 27-minute AVE connection to Madrid has created real commuter-driven demand from Spanish buyers, but genuine international mortgage cases remain rare and mostly limited to retirees or remote workers priced out of Madrid.

Worth knowing before you commit

Strict heritage protection rules apply to renovations inside the walled old town's UNESCO buffer zone, which can complicate mortgage cases tied to reform works.
